Objectives

  • To assess, diagnose and treat patients who have problems with pain, stiffness, weakness and loss of balance due to dysfunction in the muscles, bones, joints, nerves, tendons, ligaments, cartilage, and spinal discs
  • To progress rehabilitation of patients following orthopaedic surgery or intervention, e.g. joint replacement, post fracture

Description of Service

Individuals aged 16 years and above requiring musculoskeletal physiotherapy are referred to this department from MDH. The majority of patients are seen on an individual basis; each appointment taking approximately 30 minutes. Patients referred on an urgent basis are contacted by phone and seen within ten working days of referral. All other patients are either contacted by phone or receive an appointment by post at the earliest.

The Musculoskeletal Out-Patient Physiotherapy Department is divided into six units:

  • Orthopaedic and Sports Injury Unit
  • Pain Unit
  • General Musculoskeletal Unit
  • Back Care Unit
  • Rheumatology Unit
  • Hydrotherapy Unit

The physiotherapists in this department treat all types of musculoskeletal problems: back and neck pain, sports injuries, joint, muscle and tendon problems; sprains, strains, arthritis and other degenerative conditions; as well as post operative orthopaedic conditions. Treatment methods include mobilisation to increase joint movement, lengthen soft tissue and improve flexibility; exercise regimes to strengthen muscle groups, improve mobility and improve balance; electrotherapy methods to help reduce and control pain; advice and education on posture and movement disorders; advice on pain management; and hydrotherapy. Once the main problem is resolved, patients are then progressed to activities or function in which they are able to return to their regular work, duties or recreation.
