Maria-Louisa Busuttil has been serving as Director of the Directorate for Allied Health Services since May 2025. Prior to this, she held the position of Assistant Director since September 2023. With over two decades of experience across health, funding, social care, and legal sectors at national, European, and international levels, she brings a comprehensive and versatile skill set to this leadership role.
In her current capacity as Director, Maria-Louisa provides strategic and operational leadership, supporting Professional Leads, Entity Heads, Taskforce Chairs, patients, and the dedicated team within the Directorate. Her responsibilities include overseeing operational implementation, strategic planning, and service management, ensuring the Directorate’s mission to deliver high-quality, accessible, and innovative allied health services is fulfilled.
Beginning her career as a clinician in 2001, Maria-Louisa has consistently applied a forward-thinking, solution-oriented approach. As Chief Executive Officer of the Malta Association of Physiotherapists starting in 2007, she secured Erasmus+ funding to enable physiotherapists’ training abroad, fostering international collaboration and professional development. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she contributed voluntarily to the development of Telehealth Physio, a pioneering initiative still broadcast nationally.
In 2020, she expanded her expertise by leading the COVID response team at the Court Services Agency and later served as Manager II within the Directorate of Support Services, focusing on project management, procurement, and logistics. Throughout, she has actively pursued ongoing professional development at the European level to remain at the forefront of clinical and managerial excellence.
Since joining the Directorate’s leadership team, Maria-Louisa has worked collaboratively with leadership and multidisciplinary teams to drive the successful implementation of strategic initiatives. These efforts focus on enhancing service quality, promoting patient-centred care, advancing staff development, and fostering national and international partnerships.
Looking ahead, she envisions a future where digital transformation is central to the Directorate’s strategy. By integrating advanced technologies—including Artificial Intelligence and Virtual Therapy Hubs—developed through consultation with workforce members and stakeholders, Maria-Louisa aims to enhance clinical outcomes, research, and workforce training. This digital evolution will remain patient-centered, inclusive, and supported by rigorous accreditation and quality assurance frameworks.
