The main objective of this service is to assist persons with mental health problems to address their various psychosocial needs to continue living as independently as possible in their own home. Mental Health Social Workers also have a Mental Welfare Officer’s [MWO] role whereby they are mandated to carry out independent assessments of individuals who are experiencing serious mental health difficulties which could render them or others in risk of harm. In such instances an application for a compulsory admission into Mount Carmel Hospital will be compiled by the MWO. Such duties are regulated by the Mental Health Act.
Procedure
A Social Work Referral Form is to be completed by consultant psychiatrist in-charge of the person’s care.
Eligibility
All inpatients at Mount Carmel Hospital, at Psychiatric Unit (MDH), at Psychiatric Out patients (MDH) and Gozo General Hospital(GGH).

The Social Work Department receives all applications for this service. A Social worker is assigned cases according to the consultant making the referral and the worker will arrange appointments with the clients, Priority is given to emergency cases. All details are kept on a database computer system maintained within the Social work Department. If a client is not satisfied, recourse to Customer Care Unit is also possible.
