Description

Occupational Therapy services at Sir Anthony Mamo Oncology Centre are provided on both an in-patient and out-patient basis.

Occupational Therapists (OTs) at SAMOC follow clients of all age groups throughout their cancer trajectory with functional difficulties arising either from the diagnosis or the oncology treatment.

The OT uses a client-centred approach whereby priority is given to the patients` needs and goals. The OT addresses the personal needs of the patient including the physical, sensory, cognitive, perceptual, developmental, psychological and social issues. The OT also addresses issues related to the environment within which the patient interacts and finally how these affect the patient`s occupations such as self-care, work and play/leisure.

Occupational Therapy rehabilitation at SAMOC includes:

•              Upper limb retraining including strategies to address chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy and splinting

•              Assessment and recommendations of adaptive equipment

•              Lifestyle management including cancer related fatigue management programmes, and relaxation therapy programmes

•              Education and training to care givers

•              Home, work and school assessments and liaison with community support services
